--IDR Upgrade To Result in Increased Reliability and Availability
for Telephony and Data Transmission Services --
ATLANTA, June 30 /PRNewswire/ -- Scientific-Atlanta, Inc. (NYSE: SFA) today announced that it is, through its local distributor, supplying an extensive Intermediate Data Rate (IDR) upgrade for the Communications Authority of Thailand for use with its existing telephony and data satellite networks.
Scientific-Atlanta will complete the installation of the upgrade equipment this summer. As a result, the country is expected to benefit from an increase in the reliability and availability of voice and data communication services.
Intermediate Data Rate Service is well suited for international telecommunications carriers and PTTs with switched networks and high-volume requirements. The Thai IDR network will transmit voice and data communications at rates ranging from 64 Kbps to 2.048 Mbps.
The Communications Authority of Thailand (CAT), which is responsible for the country's post and telegraph services as well as all international communications services, will receive Scientific-Atlanta IDR equipment to upgrade one master earth station, five remote stations and one microwave system. The equipment being supplied is fully redundant and includes digital satellite modems, up/down converts and an earth station controller.
According to Jorge Vespoli, president of Scientific-Atlanta's Satellite Communications Division, "The IDR technology upgrade Scientific-Atlanta is supplying for CAT is another example of how our company is working to provide Thailand's government and private companies with the latest satellite technology available."
Other projects Scientific-Atlanta has worked on in Thailand include supplying a Very Small Aperture Terminal (VSAT) network to Samart Telecoms Co., a telecommunications provider licensed by the Thai Ministry of Communications; providing a variety of earth stations for use by the Bangkok Broadcasting & TV Company, Ltd., Thailand's largest private television network; and providing flyaway earth stations to the Royal Thai Army. In addition, the company is currently working with Thai Skycom Ltd. (TSL), to complete the installation of an extensive VSAT network.
Scientific-Atlanta designs, engineers, manufactures, installs, tests and maintains satellite communications and cable television systems, and has provided 45,000 earth station systems to more than 135 countries. In the past 40 years, Scientific-Atlanta's technical leadership and extensive international expertise have earned the company a reputation as a premier turnkey satellite communications systems supplier.
