SCIENTIFIC-ATLANTA FORMS BROADBAND INTERNATIONAL SATELLITE SYSTEMS UNIT TO EXPAND GLOBAL DIGITAL VIDEO COMPRESSION AND DIRECT TO HOME BUSINESS

 New ISS Headed by Duke to Focus on Delivery Services
 Over Satellite in All International Markets
 ATLANTA, Oct. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Scientific-Atlanta's Broadband Communications Group has created a new unit to expand business in the worldwide digital video compression and direct to home (DTH) satellite markets.
 The International Satellite Systems (ISS) business unit will be headed by Dwight Duke, who has been appointed vice president of ISS.
 The new operation will be responsible for product marketing, sales and advanced product development in the following international areas:
 -- MPEG (Moving Picture Experts Group)-based digital video compression systems used over satellite such as the current delivery of Scientific-Atlanta digital downlink systems to Filmnet, a Stockholm, Sweden-based distributor of movies via satellite throughout the Benelux countries.
 -- DTH satellite systems similar to a $125 million system recently ordered from Scientific-Atlanta by Orbit Communications Company to provide a consumer digital video compression satellite network to distribute video programming throughout the Middle East.
 -- Expansion of the leading market position of its recently acquired NEXUS product group in the international satellite master antenna television (SMATV) business.
 -- The rapidly growing business television, distance learning and other business and education communications activities.
 -- B-MAC encryption system over satellite. An analog system that uses digital processing and signal compression, B-MAC encoders are in operation in more than 30 countries with decoders in nearly 100 countries.
 Prior to his new position, Duke was vice president and general manager of Digital Video Systems Corp., a Canadian subsidiary of Scientific-Atlanta. Duke, with 15 years of experience at Scientific- Atlanta, earlier served as vice president of strategic operations in the Network System Group and in a range of Broadband product, operations and management positions.
