SCHULLER INTERNATIONAL BRINGS FIBER GLASS BUILDING INSULATION PRODUCTION BACK TO RICHMOND, IND.

RICHMOND, Ind., Jan. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Schuller International, Inc., manufacturer of Manville brand insulation products, today announced plans to bring fiber glass building insulation product production back to its Richmond plant.
The new production will create approximately 40 jobs this year, adding up to $1.3 million in payroll to the community. While full production is not scheduled until the fall of 1993, the company will begin hiring some employees this spring to refurbish equipment and phase in production. The Richmond plant, which currently employs 57 people, now operates as a warehousing distribution center and product development facility for fiber glass insulation.
Schuller halted operations at its Richmond plant in 1991 to consolidate production at other facilities because of the deteriorating economy. "We faced a very difficult business situation at the time we curtailed production," said Ron Mathewson, senior vice president and general manager, Building Insulation Division of Schuller. "We're now delighted that an upturn in the housing market as well as energy policies championed in the Congress by people such as Indiana congressman, Phil Sharp, has increased market demand enabling us to resume production."
Added Rod Smalley, facility manager, "The Richmond site was chosen for several reasons. The most important factor was the cooperative effort between Schuller's management, Richmond employees and the United Auto Workers International, Union Local 1073. Through this positive effort, we have reached a five-year labor agreement."
The assistance of Richmond mayor, Roger Cornett, and Jim Kinnett, director of economic development, was also key. Other factors included the positive Richmond business climate, available local services, and training resources available from the state of Indiana.
Schuller International, Inc., employs approximately 7,500 people worldwide with annual sales in 1991 in excess of $1 billion. It has 32 production facilities in North America and in Europe. Schuller manufactures and sells insulation, reinforcements, filtration, and building products. It is a wholly owned subsidiary of Manville Corporation (NYSE: MVL). Both are headquartered in Denver.
