spokesman Walter Zeisl promises that the North Hollywood students just have a knack for physics, chemistry and biology. He's not slipping in any science-knowledge-enhancing additives into their water.

``They just have a tradition of doing well, and they work real hard at it,'' said Zeisl, whose department has sponsored the event since its inception 12 years ago.

But along with their success, North Hollywood students said they've also earned New York New York, state, United States

``Everyone likes the underdog. We understand where they're coming from,'' said Tanya Marton, a 17-year-old senior from Encino.

Venice, on the other hand, has a magnet foreign language program.

``We'll take them on in German, Chinese, Japanese any day,'' he said.

Success has pushed North Hollywood students to work and practice harder. They spend hours reading textbooks, dictionaries and practicing ``buzzing.'' They've tried to master how to buzz in to answer a question before the moderator has even finished reading it.

``Speed counts as much as knowledge,'' said Stephen Yao, a 17-year-old senior from Northridge.
