trustee wants the district to release information on seniors to military recruiters.

Under the proposed policy, military recruiters would have access to the names, addresses and telephone numbers of seniors. Parents who wish could exclude their child's name from the list.

``It's certainly a lot more than helping the military recruit quality men and women for their armed services,'' board President Bill Olenick said Tuesday. ``It's also a viable career option for our students.''

The board will discuss the issue at its meeting at 6:30 tonight at the district office, 44811 Sierra Highway Sierra Highway is a road in Southern California, United States. The board is scheduled to vote on the matter at its August meeting.

Currently, the district prohibits the release of student information to the military, but provide opportunities for recruiters to meet with students at school.

A district staff report said it has been the district's practice to allow military recruiters to meet with students on campus both formally and informally based on student interest. Olenick said armed services recruiters have been invited to school career days, for example.

Olenick said the restrictions on the release of student information stem from the anti-war protests during the Vietnam War Vietnam War, conflict in Southeast Asia, primarily fought in South Vietnam between government forces aided by the United States and guerrilla forces aided by North Vietnam. .

``In the late 1960s and early '70s, military recruiters were shut out somewhat out of our school system,'' Olenick said. ``One thing taken away from them was the list of names, addresses and phone numbers of our seniors.''

Olenick wanted to emphasize that parents would have the opportunity to take their child's name off the list.

``There will be some parents who for their own reasons would not want their son or daughter on the list. That's OK. They can check the box and say no,'' Olenick said. ``Should they change their mind, we can update the list in the middle of the semester se·mes·ter

Only information on seniors will be released, and the list would probably be given to recruiters at the end of their junior year, Olenick said.

``The military is an extremely exciting and viable career option for our young people. The military is providing money and scholarships to go on to college,'' Olenick said. ``This is something that would be extremely beneficial to students in the district.''
