Nearly 150 Southland schools, including more than two dozen in the San Fernando Valley San Fernando Valley

``This award is a prestigious recognition for each school that has worked hard to improve their students' academic achievement in spite of their disadvantaged backgrounds,'' state Superintendent Jack O'Connell said. ``There is a clear record of schools staying on track and improving year after year.''

The Title 1 program is part of the federal No Child Left Behind Act The No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (Public Law 107-110), commonly known as NCLB (IPA: /ˈnɪkəlbiː/), is a United States federal law that was passed in the House of Representatives on May 23, 2001  designed to improve the academic achievement of disadvantaged students.

Recipients of the award must exceed certain Academic Performance Index growth targets for two consecutive years, according to the state.

Several San Fernando Valley elementary schools also were honored including Cantara, Chandler, Colfax, El Oro, Emelita, Encino, Hamlin, Kester, Knollwood, Lorne, Monlux, Nestle, Newcastle, Plainview, Rio Vista, Shirley, Stagg, Superior, Tarzana, Tulsa, Valerio, Vanalden and Vintage.

The state also recognized Burbank Unified's Disney Elementary; and Glendale Unified's Balboa, Columbus and Jefferson elementaries and Toll and Wilson middle schools.

Winners in Ventura County included Conejo Elementary in Thousand Oaks and Campus Canyon Elementary in Moorpark.
