The award presented annually to California's top public elementary schools takes into account their total educational program, including student expectation, adoption of state curriculum standards and leadership.

, state superintendent of public instruction in statement Wednesday. ``These schools have high expectations for their students and are holding themselves accountable for progress. By embracing rigorous standards and providing targeted support, they are a testament to what can be accomplished in public education.''

About 1,900 of California's 5,500 elementary schools were eligible to apply for the honor this year based on their state standardized testing results. Of those, 912 schools applied and underwent rigorous inspection by the California Department of Education The California Department of Education is a California agency that oversees public education. The Department oversees funding, testing, and holds local educational agencies accountable for student achievement. .

The honor was especially meaningful for Canyon Springs School. About one-third of its 820 pupils are not fluent in English, and the campus also hosts a number of children who qualify for subsidized lunches.

Principal Dan Levy attributed their success to cooperation between teachers and parents. Over the past three years, Canyon Springs has tripled the number of teachers - from 10 to about 30 - trained to work with English-learners.

``A lot of it has to do with teachers taking extra classes and taking staff development offered by the district on how to work with students with special needs relative to language,'' he said.

And officials have involved parents in language instruction. Students have take-home English tapes and books to encourage parents to study with their children, Levy said. In math, the school offers monthly workshops for parents on upcoming lessons.

``At least in math, they're able to help - even if they use Spanish to explain the concepts - as long as they understand it,'' he said.

All winners will be recognized in a ceremony May 21 in Anaheim.
