``All I could make out was `My baby! My baby!' and `coroner,''' said Reyes, 51, of Northridge. ``I just knew right then what had happened.''

He called Priscilla -- no answer. He called her parents -- no answer. He drove to their Granada Hills home and learned what he didn't want to be true.

Amanda Thompson, who thought of her brother's girlfriend like a big sister, text-messaged close friends, and about 25 people met at Alemany on Saturday evening for prayer.

The next night, 300 students and a handful of teachers showed up, as much shaken by the deaths of their friends as by the belief that it could have happened to any of them.

``They were so smart and funny and had everything going for them,'' Katie said. ``That's why you always need to tell people you love them every time you see them because you don't know Don't know (DK, DKed)

Administrators knew Monday wouldn't be a normal day at the nearly 1,500-student campus, so they provided additional counseling services, left the chapel open and permitted students to leave class if they needed to grieve. The pews were full most of the day, with heads bowed in prayer and friends consoling each other.

``Our kids are more in tune with God than we sometimes give them credit for,'' said Jan Galla, assistant principal of student services. ``They were the ones who told us they needed to pray, not just that they needed crisis counselors. They needed a time to pray and be alone with their thoughts and reflect on the people they love. They realized how fragile life is.''

In the chapel, students had erected a shrine to the girls. Photos of Angela and Priscilla looking beautiful. Prayer boxes for each so friends could pass notes to their families. Dozens of prayer candles, some that had been burning since Saturday. And a religious tapestry.

It bore an image of Jesus Christ Jesus Christ: see Jesus.
