THEN: The Register-Guard, last April, reported that the 4,562 school kits that the community gathered for children in Darfur, and were sent off last fall, were still sitting in a Pennsylvania warehouse. The situation in genocide-wracked Sudan was so bad that volunteers from the Mennonite Central Committee The Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) is a relief, service, and peace agency representing 15 Mennonite, Brethren in Christ and Amish bodies in North America. The U.S. headquarters are in Akron, Pennsylvania, the Canadian in Winnipeg, Manitoba.  had been pulled from the country for safety's sake.

"We feel real good about this," Martin says. "It's been quite a while since we were able to ship anything."

The committee, he said, depends on its partner organizations in Sudan to let them know when people and materials are safe to transport.

"For whatever reason, they're feeling a little more comfortable about pulling this off and getting the supplies to Darfur."

Martin was part of a team that "loaded and blessed" the materials on the ship last Monday.

Here in Eugene, Becky Schenck, a member of the Humanitarian Aid Humanitarian aid is material or logistical assistance provided for humanitarian purposes, typically in response to humanitarian crises. The primary objective of humanitarian aid is to save lives, alleviate suffering, and maintain human dignity.  Committee of the Lane County Darfur Coalition, had mixed feelings.

`I'm encouraged as far as getting some aid to these people, but discouraged, after reading Eric Reeves' book, `A Long Day's Dying,' about the overwhelming documentation of the United Nations knowing of this, passing resolutions but nothing happening. Still, doing our part is at least doing something.'

The committee has no plans to drop its effort to continue sending school kits - hand-sewn bags with school supplies inside, signs that the children haven't been forgotten.

The next shipment already has 123 kits finished and ready to go, she said.

People can go to a Web site to find out how to make the kits: mcc.org/kits/school.
