In an effort to benefit the California Institute of the Arts California Institute of the Arts
 known as CalArts

U.S. private institution of higher learning in Valencia. Created in 1961 through the merger of two other art institutes, it was the first in the U.S.
music department, about 30 pianos were sold over the weekend as part of a college piano loan program.

A total of 60 pianos were on sale at the school Friday, Saturday and Sunday Sunday: see Sabbath; week. , some of which were loaned to the school by Keyboard Concepts last year and replaced with new pianos this year.

``This is the best opportunity for local community to get pianos at substantial savings,'' said Tony Sciciliano, president of the National Piano Institute, who assisted during the sale.

Among the pianos, which included 10 used by students at the institute, were new and used pianos brought in by the Van Nuys-based company as part of the sale. The selection included grand pianos, baby grand pianos, concert grand pianos, uprights and consoles.

``This is a good situation for everybody,'' said Dennis Hagerty, president of Keyboard Concepts.

The college piano loan program which works with about 60 colleges and universities around the United States United States, officially United States of America, republic (2005 est. pop. 295,734,000), 3,539,227 sq mi (9,166,598 sq km), North America. The United States is the world's third largest country in population and the fourth largest country in area.  started about 10 years ago, Hagerty said.

``Schools don't have the money to go out and buy new pianos,'' Sciciliano said. ``This is a good way for them to have new pianos without having to buy them.''

While no money from the sale is actually given to the institute, students benefit by being able to use new pianos every year.

Priced between $1,000 and $40,000, the pianos come at a 20 percent to 80 percent savings, officials said.

One of the buyers Sunday turned out to be a music teacher at a new local middle school.

``This is something we really need,'' said Jan Wakelin, a music specialist at Castaic Middle School, who said the black baby grand piano purchased at the institute for near $8,000 plus tax will be used in the multipurpose mul·ti·pur·pose
