SANTA CLARITA Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. Situated in the Santa Clara valley and nearby canyons, Santa Clarita includes the former towns of Canyon Country,  - A developer has proposed leasing 10 acres near Sierra Highway Sierra Highway is a road in Southern California, United States. It runs from Tunnel Station near the north limit of the City of Los Angeles, where it intersects with San Fernando Road and Foothill Boulevard, as well as Interstate 5, and continues north to Mojave, mostly paralleling  and Golden Valley Road to the Sulphur Springs School District The Sulphur Springs School District is a school district in the Santa Clarita Valley that serves portions of the Canyon Country and Newhall communities within the city of Santa Clarita, California. As of March 26, 2006, it has 8 elementary schools.  to use as a temporary school site.

Developer Bob Cristiano told the Santa Clarita Planning Commission Noun 1. planning commission - a commission delegated to propose plans for future activities and developments

this week that it would be easy and inexpensive to grade the land for the school and extend sewer lines and other utilities to the parcel near Golden Valley Road while he builds homes nearby.

``It is a radical idea,'' Cristiano said. ``It is just the right thing to do. They'll have an instantaneous school site.''

School overcrowding overcrowding

overcrowding of animal accommodation. Many countries now publish codes of practice which define what the appropriate volumetric allowances should be for each species of animal when they are housed indoors. Breaches of these codes is overcrowding.
has become the norm in Santa Clarita as the rapidly growing population threatens to overwhelm the valley's schools, even as many schools resort to portable classrooms, multitracking and year-round schedules. Lawsuits and bureaucratic red tape have slowed the construction of schools all over the valley.

A temporary school could relieve the pressure at nearby Valley View Elementary School elementary school: see school. .

``It wasn't really my idea - it was Mayor (Laurene) Weste's idea,'' Cristiano said. ``She really cares about this community.''

Kent Frison, an assistant superintendent Assistant Superintendent, or Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), was a rank used by police forces in the British Empire. It was usually the lowest rank that could be held by a European officer, most of whom joined the police at this rank.  for Sulphur Springs Sulphur Springs, city (1990 pop. 14,062), seat of Hopkins co., NE Tex., in a farm area; inc. 1859. Vegetables, wheat, rice, and corn are grown, and livestock and dairying are important. There is clay and timber in the area. , said he had not been approached by Cristiano or Weste, and is skeptical it would be a good thing for the district.

``A temporary school is really not in our interests, or the children's interests,'' Frison said. ``It doesn't have the same amenities and benefits as a permanent school.''

The Sulphur Springs District has no temporary schools, which are made up of portable buildings linked together, Frison said. A temporary school could be built in several months, Frison said, but the site would still require the approval of the state Department of Toxic Substances.

Weste said city officials have to be proactive in solving the overcrowding crisis.

``I'm excited about this potential opportunity,'' Weste said.

Cristiano offered to lease the land to the school district for $1 a year for five years. After that, homes would be built on the land, he said. He'll then ask the district to use money from his development to build an access road to the temporary school site.

``Why am I doing this? It reduces my long-term cost,'' Cristiano said. ``This makes good business sense.''

The Planning Commission on Tuesday also unanimously approved Cristiano's plans for 111 condominiums near Sierra Highway and Rainbow Glen Drive. Several commissioners praised the project for having fewer homes than the maximum allowed in the city's code. Cristiano revealed the plan during the public hearing.

On the other side of Sierra Highway, Cristiano is planning to build 150 single-family homes near Green Mountain Drive and Golden Valley Road, approved by the City Council several months ago. The proposed school site would be adjacent to this property.
