The assembly honored men and women who served their country during wartime. Enthusiasm was high among the students, parents, teachers and veterans, many of whom sported red, white and blue attire and carried small American flags.

White Oak Principal Ann Eklund, clad in a patriotic sweater bearing the American flag, gave her own thoughts on why the occasion is so important to today's youngsters.

``I want kids to know how to be good Americans, and I don't think it comes as second nature - you have to teach them to show respect for the flag, and how to properly say the Pledge of Allegiance,'' said Wendy Jeffes, White Oak PTA president.

Army Specialist Andrew Cronin, dressed in his fatigues, posed next to a Humvee and enthusiastically answered questions from the crowd.

Chase Hardison, 9, eagerly hung on Cronin's every word, trying to learn as much as he could about military service and the impressive-looking Humvee.

``I learned that it has four different radios, but they're not all in right now,'' the youngster said, pointing inside the all-terrain military vehicle.
