SCHOOL DISTRICT ZEROES IN ON MATH SKILLS.

 of its teachers, the Eastside Union School District is sponsoring a training session this week for all its math instructors.

 staffers will lead their colleagues in a Tuesday workshop titled ``Problem Solving problem solving

``I think it's very important. This is a year where we're stressing math in our in-services,'' said Superintendent Connie Webb. ``This is also the year that we are adopting a supplemental math textbook to help bolster our math materials for the teachers.''

In addition to the traditional math textbook, the district hopes to provide a workbook work·book

1. A booklet containing problems and exercises that a student may work directly on the pages.

2. A manual containing operating instructions, as for an appliance or machine.

 with additional problems to help students better understand the material, Webb said. This is in response to concerns by teachers and parents that the textbook does not provide enough opportunities to practice.

During its Aug. 9 meeting, the school board will determine whether to incorporate the workbook into the curriculum.

Webb also said that she is looking into having teachers in grades 4-6 - when algebra concepts are introduced - take an advanced math course through Antelope Valley College Antelope Valley College is a comprehensive community college located in Lancaster, California, USA. It is operated by the Antelope Valley Community College District, with a primary service area of 1,945 square miles covering portions of Los Angeles and Kern counties. .

``You know in algebra if you don't use it all the time it's sort of like a foreign language,'' Webb said. ``So this is kind of a refresher course.''
