The 31,000-square-foot building is a former Payless drugstore closed more than two years ago, located in a shopping center shopping center, a concentration of retail, service, and entertainment enterprises designed to serve the surrounding region. The modern shopping center differs from its antecedents—bazaars and marketplaces—in that the shops are usually amalgamated into  at 47th Street East and Avenue S.

``It meets the state code in that it is earthquake safe,'' school board member Helen Acosta said. ``We've looked at plans at how we can convert it to classrooms.
