Rob Challinor, 50, of Victorville, was hired on a three-year contract that will pay him $132,000 a year plus benefits. He will start work Monday.

``I did some research about the district and was intrigued by the high achieving scores and really just the quality individuals,'' Challinor said. ``They have a lot of stability in the district and a nice blend of communities of Boron boron (bōr`ŏn) [New Gr. from borax], chemical element; symbol B; at. no. 5; at. wt. 10.81; m.p. about 2,300°C;; sublimation point about 2,550°C;; sp. gr. 2.3 at 25°C;; valence +3. , North Edwards and Edwards Air Force Base Edwards Air Force Base, U.S. military installation, 301,000 acres (121,805 hectares), S Calif., NE of Lancaster; est. 1933. The board voted unanimously at Wednesday's meeting to hire Challinor. He was one of five candidates interviewed for the job.

``He's got 28 years in the same district over in the Hesperia area, he's not afraid to live here in the desert, and he's not a guy to be prone to moving around a lot,'' board president Chuck James said. ``We are looking for Looking for

Challinor is currently assistant superintendent of educational services. He started out as teacher in Hesperia and has held jobs as junior high assistant principal, junior principal and high school principal.

He has a bachelor's degree in physical education from the University of Redlands The University of Redlands is a private liberal arts and sciences university located in Redlands, California. Challinor said he plans to commute for the time being.

The board is replacing former Superintendent Mike Summerbell, who retired in mid-August but stayed on as a consultant until interim Superintendent Greg Lundeen was brought on board at the end of August.

Summerbell retired after 11 years at Muroc and two years in the top post.

The superintendent search process has taken several turns.

Trustees initially sought applicants from among district employees, drawing two applicants, but one then decided to leave the district and the other withdrew from consideration, trustees said.

The search was then expanded to include applicants from outside the school district, but the trustees did not find a suitable candidate from among the 15 people who applied.

Muroc then began talks with the superintendent of the El Segundo Unified School District, who was planning to retire, to work as an interim superintendent, but he, too, withdrew his name from consideration.

Muroc has 2,300 students at seven schools in Boron and North Edwards and at Edwards Air Force Base.
