Construction on the first school to be built with a March bond measure is set to begin next month, after the Lancaster School District Lancaster School District may refer to:

board awarded a $15.2 million contract for Amargosa Creek Middle School.

Located at 27th Street West and Avenue J, the new school will alleviate the problems caused by the lack of a neighborhood middle school for students living west of the Antelope Valley Freeway The Antelope Valley Freeway is a freeway in Los Angeles and Kern counties in southern California. It is signed as California State Highway 14 along its length. It connects Greater Los Angeles to the rapidly developing Antelope Valley. , school officials say.

``This is going to be a signature event for this school district. It's a whole new era,'' Assistant Superintendent Assistant Superintendent, or Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), was a rank used by police forces in the British Empire. It was usually the lowest rank that could be held by a European officer, most of whom joined the police at this rank.  Ned McNabb said Wednesday. ``We're finally at a point where we're going to have not only sufficient housing but first class housing. With the funds we've got, this is just the start.''

The school board voted 5-0 Tuesday night to award the contract to W.D. Gott Construction. The school district will pay for half, using proceeds from the $29 million bond issue passed by voters in March, while the state will cover the other half.

Initially, the lowest bid was $14.4 million, submitted by Skidmore Contracting, the company that will build Eastside School District's new Cole Middle School at 30th Street East and Avenue I.

However, Skidmore withdrew its bid, telling the school district it made ``a substantial mathematical error in the roofing bid,'' documents show.

W.D. Gott Construction was the second lowest qualified bidder, and the next two bids were $12,000 and $17,000 more than Gott's, records show.

A groundbreaking ceremony is scheduled for June 24, and construction is scheduled to start in early July.

Officials hope Amargosa Creek will be ready to open for the start of the 2000 school year.

``It's going to be a real push to be ready for next school year, which starts July 1,'' school board president Mel Kleven said. ``It would not take much of a hiccup hiccup or hiccough, involuntary spasmodic contraction of the diaphragm followed by a sharp intake of air, which is abruptly stopped by a sudden, involuntary closing of the glottis (opening between the vocal cords); the consequent blocking of air  to create a problem. Amargosa Creek will open with approximately 1,000 students and eventually will house about 1,100 students. No school colors or mascot have been named yet.

The school, however, does have a principal. Howard Horn, who is in his fourth year as principal at Joshua Elementary School elementary school: see school. , will take over duties at Amargosa Creek.

``Moving from any place is hard,'' Horn said. ``But it's a thing that you get used to once you become an administrator in a school district.''

Horn said that the city definitely needed a fourth middle school and that it will help cut down the size of the student body at the other schools.
