Union School District board last November has been appointed to fill a vacant seat.

Steven DeMarzio, 45, of Palmdale was named to replace Deborah Rutkowski-Hines, who resigned from the board Jan. 2, citing personal reasons.

``I think I'm still qualified to do it, and I still have a passion to serve the community,'' DeMarzio said.

DeMarzio said he supports the board's decision to place a $55 million school construction bond measure before voters on the June 6 ballot.

``We need to keep pace with the growth in the valley,'' DeMarzio said.

Trustees selected DeMarzio from among six candidates at a special meeting Thursday. He was sworn in after his appointment.

Board President Gwen Farrell said DeMarzio has shown commitment to the district by volunteering at Quartz quartz, one of the commonest of all rock-forming minerals and one of the most important constituents of the earth's crust. Chemically, it is silicon dioxide, SiO2.  Hill Elementary School elementary school: see school. . ``He's been coming to board meetings for a couple of years. I think he convinced us all that he had a real passion for kids,'' Farrell said.

At a January board meeting, Farrell wanted to appoint former trustee Christine LeBeau to the seat, but the suggestion died for a lack of a motion from a fellow trustee.

LeBeau finished fourth in balloting in the November election, losing by 65 votes.
