SCHOOL BOARD OPENS DOOR TO GREEN DOT PLAN CHARTER OPERATOR INVITED TO COLLABORATE ON LOCKE.

Byline: NAUSH BOGHOSSIAN

Staff Writer

Two weeks after rejecting a petition from successful charter school operator Green Dot to open eight charters on Locke High's campus, the school board agreed Tuesday to invite Green Dot to work with the district to improve the low-performing school.

Board member Jon Lauritzen, who's locked in a heated battle with Tamar Galatzan to retain his seat on the school board, voted down Green Dot's proposal because he said there was no plan.

But his motion Tuesday called on Green Dot and all other interested charter operators to work with district officials, Locke teachers and the Watts community to develop a plan and open charters on the campus in 2008.

"The question is: Do we collaborate or compete?" said Barr, who could appeal the board's rejection and open his charters on Locke's campus in the 2007-08 school year.

"As long as we can implement our six tenets, ... I think it's always a positive if there's opportunity for all of us to work together, but I don't know Don't know (DK, DKed)

Barr emphasized that he does not have a deal yet with the district and that details are still being worked out for collaboration.

"The board's action raises the potential for cooperation in 2008, but we haven't sat down and talked about it yet."
