SCHOOL, SCHOLARSHIP TO GET ROMER NAME.

A middle school and a scholarship will be named for outgoing Superintendent Roy Romer Roy R. Romer said he took the job six years ago after a lifetime of work in the public sector because he felt that educating children was the most important calling.

``I leave more humble than I came, humble in the sense that I really do appreciate the gift all of us were given to work in this area, and humble also because of the challenges still in front of us,'' he said. ``You'll see me again.''

Romer then welcomed Brewer, a retired Navy admiral. Brewer vowed that after years protecting the country, he would now fight to protect the district's 727,000 students from crime, ignorance and poverty.

``Roy Romer, you have left me a great foundation and it's now my job to build skyscrapers on top of your foundation. And I know your phone number and I will be calling it. Don't change it,'' Brewer said.

She is a former member of the California State Assembly.  and students from the Santee Educational Complex -- the first school built under Romer's leadership -- praised the former Colorado governor for launching a $19.2 billion construction program that ended a 30-year stretch with no new schools.

``You will now be a part of the history of this city that I don't think anyone will ever be able to match,'' board member Jon Lauritzen said. ``You have won the hearts and minds of this city and we'll be forever grateful to you for what you've done.''

School board member Marguerite LaMotte said a man with Romer's talents should continue sharing his knowledge.

``With the wisdom and the knowledge that you have, you cannot go forward to retire,'' she said, adding he should continue to share his expertise.
