SCHOLARS' CONTEST IN FIRST TALLY; MOORPARK HIGH WINS VENTURA COUNTY EVENT.

Moorpark High School Moorpark High School, located in Moorpark, California, is a public high school in the Moorpark Unified School District and currently has an enrollment of 2,478 students.[1]  won Ventura County's Academic Decathlon on Saturday, edging out runner-up Simi Valley High School Simi Valley High School is a secondary school located in Simi Valley, California which was established in 1920 as the first high school in the valley. It nestles in the Santa Susana Mountains and is adjacent to the San Fernando Valley, part of the city and county of Ventura. , which tied for first place in the Super Quiz portion of the event.

Moorpark's `B' team took third place in the Ventura County decathlon.

In a separate regional contest among private schools, Alemany High School of Mission Hills was leading, taking the top spot in the Super Quiz.

 school among the top five after the results of half the Super Quiz were announced. El Camino coach Mark Johnson said his team still has a chance to win the local title, noting that the Super Quiz accounts for only a fraction of the overall competition.

Each nine-member team is divided into three groups of A, B and C students. Other Valley teams also fared well in the daylong event that featured 531 scholars from across the district.

The two Senior High Options teams, which included eight girls from the San Fernando Valley, pumped their fists in the air when they answered correctly and shook their heads solemnly when they missed a question. Options teams are fielded by teens with spotty attendance records and poor grades from local continuation high schools.

And Taft High School's all-boy team scored 45 out of a possible 60 points in the first half of the Super Quiz, said district spokesman Shel Erlich. Behzad Rad, 17, was the only member of his team to score a perfect individual score of 10.

``Some of the answers were ambiguous but I went with my gut feeling,'' Rad said after the event.

In the regional private school contest, St. Francis High School of La Canada Flintridge placed second behind Alemany in the Super Quiz.
