SCHMID TELECOMMUNICATIONS ZURICH TO USE AT&T PARADYNE'S CAP TECHNOLOGY IN ITS NEW HDSL PRODUCTS

LARGO, Fla., Nov. 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Schmid Telecommunications Zurich announced today that it will incorporate AT&T Paradyne's CAP (carrierless amplitude and phase modulation) technology in its new HDSL (high-bit-rate digital subscriber line) transmission equipment for faster service provisioning, lower installation and maintenance costs, reduced engineering costs and higher reliability.
The key characteristic that provides these benefits is the extended transmission range of CAP/HDSL, replacing the need for repeaters, which are required to extend traditional E1 (2.048 Mbps.) beyond 900 meters.
HDSL, an alternative to traditional E1, extends 3,600 meters and allows telcos to provide service within three to six days, compared to the 30-60 days required to deploy E1.
"There are unlimited opportunities for cost-effective high-bandwidth digital services in the European marketplace," said Paul Schmid, president of Schmid Telecommunications. "Our HDSL product enables companies to deploy these services without delay caused by the lack of fiber optics in the local loop and without the costs and hassles associated with line conditioning or repeaters. We are confident that our CAP-based product will outperform any alternative technologies."
Joseph Crupi, a senior vice president of AT&T Paradyne, said, "Schmid Telecommunications has demonstrated unique dedication and skill, which will enable them to have the first CAP-based E1 HDSL on the market. This is a major step toward global availability of CAP-based DSL products."
Schmid Telecommunications, based in Zurich, Switzerland, develops, manufactures, and globally markets and supports a full range of telecommunications products. This includes advanced solutions for transmission, automatic measurement systems, as well as state-of-the-art OSI-based solutions for Transmission Network Management Systems (TNM).
AT&T Paradyne, headquartered in Largo, develops, manufactures and markets global data and telecommunications products. The unit of AT&T also licenses its CAP high-bandwidth transmission technology, as well as its VoiceSpan(TM) simultaneous voice and data technology.
