SCHLUMBERGER ATE DOMINATES E-BEAM PROBER MARKET WITH SHIPMENT OF 200TH IDS SYSTEM

SAN JOSE, Calif., April 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Schlumberger Technologies has announced the shipment of their 200th IDS Integrated Diagnostic System, a product line including both e-beam probers and focused ion- beam (FIB) systems. This firmly establishes the company as the market leader in e-beam and FIB diagnostics.
Accounting for over 90 percent of the e-beam prober market, IDS systems have been installed in virtually every major semiconductor company including IBM, TI, Motorola, Toshiba, Hyundai, Fujitsu, Samsung, SGS Thomson Microelectronics, AT&T, VLSI Technology and NTT. The 200th IDS system was shipped in March to the Microprocessor and Memory Technologies Group of Motorola, and will be used to shorten cycle times of Motorola's advanced microprocessor products. According to Tom Spohrer, circuit project leader, "Our experience with our first IDS system has been rewarding. Its ease of use allows our engineers to focus on the chip, not the e-beam. The IDS system has really helped our time to market, which is what prompted the purchase of our new IDS 5000HX."
The Schlumberger IDS product was the first to integrate scanning- electron-microscope technology with a CAD/CAE navigation environment, allowing designers with no previous knowledge of SEMs to easily probe a live circuit and diagnose devices by taking voltage-contrast measurements. Since the introduction of the first IDS 5000 system in 1987, Schlumberger has broadened and enhanced the IDS product line with the high-end IDS 5000HX which offers fast acquisition speed and low noise performance, the compact and highly mobile IDS 3000 ProbeStation 2 which is priced at almost half the cost of a high-end system, and the IDS 7000 FIBstation, a focused ion-beam system which facilitates IC repair and cross sectioning. In addition, new software products provide semiautomated guided-probe assistance and networking to a shared CAD database of IC failure analysis, e-beam, FIB and mechanical-probing systems. Jackie Tubis, marketing director for Schlumberger Diagnostic Systems, comments, "We've become known for solving critical VLSI problems. Our new introductions in `93 and '94 will more than continue that tradition."
