    SCHERING-PLOUGH UNIT FILES SUIT CHARGING INFRINGEMENT OF IL-4 PATENT
    NEWARK, N.J., Nov. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Schering Corporation, a subsidiary of Schering-Plough Corporation (NYSE: SGP) of Madison, N.J., has filed suit against Sterling Winthrop Inc., of Montvale, N.J., charging infringement of Schering's U.S. Patent No. 5,017,691 for human interleukin-4 (IL-4), a protein that stimulates the immune system.
    The suit, filed in the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey in Newark, charges that Sterling Winthrop has infringed Schering's patent by using IL-4 in the United States and intends to sell IL-4 in the United States prior to the patent's expiration.
    Schering's complaint seeks to enjoin Sterling Winthrop from any further infringement of Schering's patent.
    Schering-Plough is conducting Phase I/II clinical trials using IL-4 for the treatment of multiple myeloma, Hodgkin's disease and lung cancer, with other potential areas of study including various solid tumors and immunological disorders.
