Establishment of the new subregion could allow leaders to get specific data on traffic, air quality and growth.

``We'll have a seat at the table and provide input from a Valley perspective on regional issues,'' said Mitch Englander, chief of staff for Councilman Greig Smith Greig Smith is a Los Angeles City Councilman, representing the 12th District, which includes Granada Hills, Northridge and other parts of the Western San Fernando Valley. Smith is also a reserve officer for the Los Angeles Police Department. , who pushed SCAG for the new status.

Traditionally, agencies including SCAG -- which handles regional planning for transportation, growth, waste management and air quality -- gather statistics for the city of Los Angeles, which sprawls from San Pedro to Sylmar.

But Valley leaders have sought area-specific statistics to better understand and serve the 1.8 million people in the region.

Last year, the U.S. Census Bureau agreed to break out data from the San Fernando Valley to provide a more accurate portrait of the region's demographics.

Englander said SCAG's decision, paired with the census change, will affect a broad range of Valley issues.

``This will have a positive impact in the long term on how we look and move forward with infrastructure, planning and growth,'' he said.

With subregion status, SCAG will appoint a panel of elected leaders from L.A., Burbank, Glendale, Calabasas and San Fernando, who will meet to discuss Valley issues.

``This will make it possible to have planning, thinking and visioning that is more tailored to the need of the San Fernando Valley.''
