It became popular, spreading from the east coast of the United States to the west coast, in large part via women's colleges.  coach Chris Gobrecht finally believes the Trojans are ready to be among the elite teams in the Pacific-10 Conference The Pacific-10 Conference (Pac-10) is a college athletic conference which operates in the western United States. ``The question is not `Will we be good?' This team will be good. The question is when?,'' Gobrecht said Tuesday. ``In all honesty, I'd be disappointed if we're not among the top three or four (in the Pac-10), but I think we can make a run at the title.''

After rebuilding the program her first three years, Gobrecht is optimistic because a strong recruiting class is joining nine returning players to finally give the Trojans a formidable roster.

``We've waited a long time to have this level of depth and athleticism,'' Gobrecht said. ``We will be a much better team in a lot of areas.''

The primary focus will be on 6-foot-2 freshman forward Ebony Hoffman Ebony Vernice Hoffman (born August 27, 1982 in Los Angeles, California) is a professional basketball player for the Indiana Fever in the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA).

She was selected as the ninth overall pick in the 2004 WNBA Draft.
of Narbonne High in Harbor City, the No. 1-ranked team in the nation last year. Hoffman was considered one of the top five players in the country by most recruiting services.

``She's so much stronger then people I've played against,'' junior shooting guard The Shooting guard (SG), also known as the two or off guard,[1] is one of five traditional positions on a basketball team. Players of the position are often shorter, leaner, and quicker than forwards.  Tiffany Elmore said. ``She's just a big presence.''

USC also added shooting guard Aisha Hollans of Berkeley High, rated one of the top 25 players in the nation, and point guard Ryane Alexander of Copperas Cove, Texas Copperas Cove is a city in Coryell County, Texas, United States. Two of Hoffman's teammates at Narbonne are also expected to make an impact: Jessica Cheeks, a 5-9 guard who attended junior college last year, and 6-4 redshirt freshman center Portia Mitchell.

This is Mitchell's first year of competitive basketball since 1998, because she was ineligible her senior year at Narbonne and did not meet Gobrecht's conditioning standards last season. She has already passed a conditioning test for this year.

``There's not too many Portias running around the Pac-10,'' Gobrecht said. ``You can park her in the middle and say, 'Good luck.' You've got to move her.''

USC's question mark will be at point guard, which was a problem position last season. One of the candidates, junior Camille Norwood, is out with a stretched knee ligament. Gobrecht said she might play two or three shooting guards together - Elmore, Hollans and Cheeks - if no point guard emerges.

``Those are really good guards and we need to have them on the floor,''Gobrecht said.

USC opens its season Nov. 17 at Creighton.
