Sometimes, players and fans can think alike.

One of the main topics expected on the agenda when the USC football team broke into smaller groups for player discussions Monday night was the Trojans' recent struggles against traditional rivals Notre Dame and UCLA UCLA University of California at Los Angeles

.

A significant topic but perhaps surprising to come up so early into training camp.

``I think it's important for people to know we're just as concerned as the fans,'' quarterback Brad Otton said.

Otton, whose first real playing experience in those games did not come until last season, said the way USC An abbreviation for U.S. Code.  played against Notre Dame and UCLA last year was as important as actually losing the games.

``We played our two worst games in the two biggest games,'' Otton said. ``People didn't see us playing with a lot of heart. We didn't have a lot of emotion in those games.''

linemen Mark Manskar and David Pratchard were in a group of about 10 players that was stuck in an elevator for more than an hour in their dormitory Sunday night.

It probably didn't help that most of the players were offensive linemen, including 270-pound Jason Grain, 300-pound Chris Brymer and 280-pound Brett Samperi.

Not to mention the 265-pound Manskar and 290-pound Pratchard.

``We were stuck in there for about an hour and twenty minutes,'' Manskar said. ``They couldn't get it going.''

Initiation time: The freshmen got their traditional welcome Sunday night, when the seniors taped them down to their beds.

``It was just fun and games "Fun and Games" is an episode of the original The Outer Limits television show. It first aired on 30 March, 1964, during the first season. Opening narration

He weighs 230 pounds and USC coach John Robinson said he wanted the fullback down to around 220.

Fine freshmen: Although it is premature to fully analyze the true freshmen after their initial practices, Robinson said he would like to play between four and seven players this season.

``We came away with an early good feeling about our players,'' Robinson said.

The sure bets to play are offensive guard Travis Claridge and middle linebacker Chris Claiborne. Others who performed strongly in the opening freshmen-only practices were wide receiver R. Hitting the weights: The Trojans had 12 players bench press 400 or more pounds during their annual weightlifting contest. Four years ago, USC had five players lift more than 400 pounds.
