SC NOTEBOOK: USC FEELING SUPER.

Byline: Chris Cocoles Staff Writer

USC's baseball team doesn't know much more than the basics about its opponent in the NCAA NCAA

National Collegiate Athletic Association
Super Regional, beginning tonight at 6.

``It's not like I've never heard of Florida International,'' Trojans left fielder and Montclair Prep of Van Nuys graduate Josh Persell said. ``You make it this far and everybody's good.''

The visiting Golden Panthers don't expect any ``Who are these guys?'' queries. FIU FIU Florida International University

(43-19) has participated in postseason play five of the last six years.

But throughout South Florida, FIU was blanketed in obscurity because of its neighbor in Coral Gables Coral Gables, city (1990 pop. 40,091), Miami-Dade co., SE Fla., SW of Miami; inc. 1925. Founded at the height of the Florida land boom, Coral Gables is a noted planned city, with tree-lined boulevards and Mediterranean-style buildings. . Miami, a three-time College World Series champion, remains one of the nation's elite programs.

``I do give credit to the University of Miami This article is about the university in Coral Gables, Florida. For the university in Oxford, Ohio, see Miami University.

During that span, he has become one of the few collegiate baseball coaches to record a thousand coaching victories, having reached that  said. ``Miami is across town, but at the same time, Miami has probably made us a better team. I feel like our team ... is beginning to make them a better team.''

The Golden Panthers are 18-79 all-time against the Hurricanes, but the teams split their last eight meetings, including wins on each other's home field this year.

--Bullish pen: Behind 13-game winner Mark Prior, 11-game winner Rik Currier and torrid sophomore Anthony Reyes in the Trojans' (42-17) rotation, the bullpen hasn't been needed much lately.

But coach Mike Gillespie is more confident going to relievers such as Brian Bannister, Fraser Dizard and Jordan Olson.

Bannister has been particularly tough on opposing batters. He threw 3 2/3 scoreless innings to finish off Oral Roberts in the Trojans' regional opener last weekend. The son of former major-league pitcher Floyd Bannister has a 1.40 earned-run average, two wins and three saves since March 27.

``It's a comfort to know those guys are efficient as they've been and available,'' Gillespie said.
