Trepagnier will not accompany the Trojans this morning when they depart for the Pearl Harbor Classic basketball tournament in Hawaii because his clearance is not expected to become official until this afternoon. But sources said Trepagnier will probably take a flight to Honolulu on Wednesday and join the Trojans before Thursday's game.

``Probably having Jeff back will help a lot,'' point guard Brandon Granville said.

Trepagnier was interviewed by NCAA officials two weeks ago for taking a trip to Las Vegas with Fresno State point guard Tito Maddox in late September that was allegedly paid for by a runner for an agent.

Maddox was eventually suspended eight games by the NCAA. Trepagnier's suspension will apparently be half that time.

USC originally said Trepagnier was cleared when the NCAA began investigating Maddox's situation, but the school later said it suspended Trepagnier on Dec. 1 for ``violating athletic department rules,'' without admitting he was under investigation.

Trepagnier has missed the Trojans' past four games. He missed three games prior to the suspension with a stress fracture stress fracture

 in his foot.

Trepagnier would be a welcome addition to the 13th-ranked Trojans (7-0), because he is considered USC's most athletic player. He averaged 15.9 points, 6.6 rebounds, 3.2 steals and shot 38 percent on 3-pointers last season.

USC coach Henry Bibby would not comment on Trepagnier's status Monday.

: Bibby was scolded in a letter from the Pacific-10 Conference for his comments last week criticizing the officiating following USC's victory over Pepperdine.

He's been asked not to comment on officiating again, but that didn't seem to stop him Monday.

``I'm not saying the officials aren't good, I'm saying the kids aren't allowed to play basketball,'' Bibby said. ``Do the fans come to see Sam Clancy or the officials? This is entertainment. If you take that away, what's the point of the fans coming out?

``We've had different officials calling things a different way. Some are physical. Some are not. A foul is a foul, but now what is a foul? Who has the space (on the floor), the offense or defense? I don't know Don't know (DK, DKed)
