.

Simmons had surgery at USC University Hospital to relieve pressure on a nerve in his spinal column spinal column, bony column forming the main structural support of the skeleton of humans and other vertebrates, also known as the vertebral column or backbone. It consists of segments known as vertebrae linked by intervertebral disks and held together by ligaments. . He is scheduled to be released Monday.

``The doctors were positive,'' USC coach Paul Hackett said. ``It will be tough for him to sit in the hospital and watch the UCLA game.''

Simmons will be replaced by freshman Darrell Rideaux, who will make his first career start. Another true freshman True freshman is a term used in NCAA sports, indicating that an athlete is playing the sport in his first year of college, rather than redshirting for one or more years to protect future college eligibility. , Kevin Arbet Kevin Arbet is an American football cornerback currently playing for the Arena Football League San Jose SaberCats. His uncle, Darren Arbet is the head coach. Professional career

, replaces Rideaux as the nickelback.

``I think UCLA's going to come at us quite often,'' Rideaux said. ``How we respond to the adversity will be the key. I do feel like I've been groomed and I'm ready I'm Ready is the double platinum second release from R&B singer Tevin Campbell. I'm Ready yielded the biggest R&B hit of his career the #1 R&B smash "Can We Talk", and produce 3 more successful hits in "I'm Ready", "Always In My Heart" and "Don't Say Goodbye Girl".  to step up.''

Rideaux, who is 5-foot-8, said he won't be intimidated when he has to defend UCLA standout Danny Farmer, who is 6-4.

``It's like David vs. Goliath, that's the attitude that I take,'' Rideaux said. ``It's nothing new. I have a lot of respect for Danny Farmer but I am a competitor.''

Added Hackett: ``We'll just stack them up on top of each other.''

Soward will play: Wide receiver R. Jay Soward Rodney (R.) Jay Soward (born January 16, 1978 in Rialto, California) is a football player who most recently played for the CFL's Toronto Argonauts as a wide receiver. College career
He burst onto the college football scene with a 4-TD game vs.
said that he will play against UCLA, and that his strained left hamstring would be OK.

``It's cool,'' Soward said. ``I'm ready to go.''

Soward said he feels much better than he did entering the Cal game, when he was forced to sit because of the same injury.

No defense? Hackett shrugged off the impression that UCLA's defense has not been very good this season, despite ranking 10th in rush defense in the Pacific-10 Conference and ninth in total defense.

``A year ago, they didn't have a very good defense and kicked our butt,'' Hackett said.

No managers game: The annual game between the USC and UCLA managers will apparently not take place. USC's managers placed three phone calls to UCLA regarding the game, but none were returned.

Roberts possible: Offensive lineman Trevor Roberts (broken wrist) has been fitted with a cast and is listed as possible.

No deja vu: USC quarterback John Fox said he isn't thinking back to 1997, the last time he started against UCLA.

``It means a great deal in terms of bragging rights, but as far as two years ago, I haven't even envisioned that.''

Big recruiting weekend? Hackett was asked whether the outcome of the USC-UCLA game has much effect on recruiting.

``Let's face it, all the good players in Southern California will be at the game,'' Hackett said.

Not quite. Tight end Alex Holmes of Harvard-Westlake, who is considering both schools, will visit Michigan this weekend. Another player considering both schools, safety Matt Grootegoed of Mater Dei, said he will attend the game.

Alumni support: Hackett promised every senior from last year's team a sideline pass for Saturday's game, and said about 12 to 15 have responded.

There will also be a walkway formed by ex-players for the team to enter the field before the game.
