``You just can't take early success and think that's how it will be,'' Williams said. ``I only see the future one step at a time. --Polamalu makes cut: Safety Troy Polamalu was named one of the three finalists for the Thorpe Award, which goes to the nation's top player in the secondary. The other finalists are Mike Doss of Ohio State and Terrance Newman of Kansas State.

``It's remarkable because he's been real hurt,'' USC coach Pete Carroll said. ``It's something he's worthy of.''

Carroll said Tuesday that Polamalu had his strongest practice since spraining his ankle against Washington State.

--Big weekend: Among the players visiting USC this weekend will be quarterback Chris Leak of Charlotte, N.C., linebacker LaMarr Woodley of Saginaw, Mich., and cornerbacks Dareus Hiley and Donte Whitner of Cleveland, Ohio.

All four are considered among the top 100 players in the nation.

--No contact: Although offensive coordinator Norm Chow has not heard from Utah about its head-coaching position, Carroll said he would not try to stop Chow from leaving if he's ever offered a job.

``I'll never stand in the way of a guy moving up,'' Carroll said. ``I think he's a likely candidate and a great candidate.''

--Katnik waits: Center Norm Katnik was unable to practice and hopes to return Thursday. Derek Graf replaced Katnik, and freshman Fred Matua also was being prepared for possible playing time, which would cost his redshirt year.
