coach Lou Holtz This article is about the American football coach; for other people named Lou Holtz, see Lou Holtz (disambiguation).
Louis Leo Holtz (born on January 6, 1937 in Follansbee, West Virginia) is an author, television commentator, motivational speaker, and former NCAA football head
paced the field and observed every aspect of practice, watching his one-time graduate assistant Pete Carroll in action while trying to get some tips on the USC An abbreviation for U.S. Code.  coach's defensive schemes.

It was an ironic sight with Holtz on the field since he turned down the USC job in 1997, only to coach the other USC a year later.

``He'd have lit L.A. up,'' Carroll said. ``He would have been great.''

Instead, Holtz observed his former pupil. Unhappy with South Carolina's defense, Holtz called Carroll for several weeks to get his advice, something that bemused Carroll, who was a lowly student-assistant on the Arkansas staff in 1977 when Holtz hired him.

``I had a chance to introduce him to the team and told them the last time we were at the Orange Bowl, I was a pup graduate-assistant (for Holtz),'' Carroll said. ``He put together a great game plan against Oklahoma. I was hooked from then on. I'm grateful he wants to talk. We don't share stuff with anybody.''

Arkansas defeated Oklahoma 31-6 in Carroll's only other appearance in an Orange Bowl.

``Where I couldn't get an interview or anything before, I got interviews at Iowa State, UCLA UCLA University of California at Los Angeles
UCLA University Center for Learning Assistance (Illinois State University)
UCLA University of Carrollton, TX and Lower Addison, TX
and Army right after that game,'' Carroll said.

Holtz was all compliments after viewing Carroll's practice.

``Pete has found his niche. He knows how to succeed,'' Holtz said. ``I'll go back and share some things with our team. Their defense knocks people back and knocks them down.

``They have a whole philosophy that makes them play together. I also had the privilege to watch (offensive coordinator) Norm Chow.''

 raving about the practice.

``I was really pleased, this was one of our best practices,'' he said.

However, Chow said, ``We were pretty sloppy today.''

--No practice: While USC practiced Saturday, Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz gave the Hawkeyes the day off, other than some light conditioning and strength drills.

That should give quarterback Brad Banks, who is from Belle Glade, Fla., time to digest his mother's food.

``My mom's cooked up a feast the past couple days,'' Banks said. ``I'm pretty full right now. A lot of home cooking.''
