SC INSIDE LOOK: SAN JOSE LET HUGE VICTORY GET AWAY.

Byline: Jill Painter Staff Writer

Dave Baldwin Dave Baldwin was the head football coach of San Jose State University from 1997-2000. During his tenure, he had three straight wins over Stanford (including their rosebowl season of 1999). In 1997, SJSU upset No.  might have saved his job. However, no one associated with San Jose San Jose, city, United States

State was happy after Saturday's game.

The Spartans coach, rumored to be fighting for his job, had ninth-ranked USC An abbreviation for U.S. Code.  on the ropes until the Trojans avoided catastrophe by rallying with two late scores for a 34-24 victory.

``We had our opportunities and we didn't do it in the fourth quarter when we needed to,'' said Baldwin, the former Cal State Northridge coach. ``That's a tremendous football team. They've got great skill.''

Rashied Davis Rashied Khalid Davis (born July 24, 1979) is an American football wide receiver for the Chicago Bears. He is an alumnus of San José State University. Prior to playing with the Bears, Davis played for the San Jose SaberCats of the Arena Football League. , the former Kennedy High star, caught six passes for 121 yards on a big stage. He had catches of 38 and 42 yards, both of which contributed to scoring drives and a 12-point San Jose State lead heading into the fourth quarter.

Still, he couldn't have been more disappointed.

``We should've won this game,'' he said. ``We got complacent com·pla·cent

in the second half. We didn't play hard enough. We gave it to them. But they played hard in the second half.''

Davis was consoled by family and friends in the end zone following the game.

The best anyone could come up with was, ``Ya'll had them scared.'' However, Davis wasn't looking to scare anyone or even earn respect for the low-profile San Jose program; he wanted to win.

``We don't get no respect from anyone,'' Davis said. ``We beat the socks off Stanford and we still don't get no respect. This may get us a little respect. But all I care about is winning.''

He also cares about Baldwin, who he wants to stay next season.

``Hopefully (his job) ain't in jeopardy,'' Davis said. ``I want him to be here. I don't know Don't know (DK, DKed)

anything about that. But I hope he stays.''

Baldwin built a winner at Northridge, where he turned a 2-8 team in 1995 into a 7-4 team the following year. He then left for San Jose, where he's 13-24 in the fourth and final season of his contract.

Davis certainly did his part to help Baldwin.

He got behind cornerback Chris Cashand and caught a 42-yard pass to the USC 2 on third-and-9. Two plays later, Deonce Whitaker scored from 1 yard out to give the Spartans a 17-12 lead.

Davis also had a key reception on San Jose State's ensuing en·sue

Davis caught a 10-yard pass to the 14 on the next play and Whitaker ran it in from 14 yards out to put San Jose State up 24-12 with less than a minute left in the first half.

The Spartans finished with 366 yards.

``Our offense is so potent,'' Davis said. ``Nebraska couldn't stop our offense. I feel we have the best receivers in the nation.''

It just didn't add up to what would've been the biggest victory in Baldwin's career.
