SBS Technologies FPGA Computing on a PMC Module Simplifies Integration of Video and Signal Processing.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- Tsunami(TM) PMC (1) See Portable Media Center.

(2) (PCI Mezzanine Card) A PCI-based mezzanine card that is widely adapted to VMEbus, CompactPCI and PCI cards.
Architecture Ideal for High Performance Requirements of Video and Signal Processing, Imaging and Software Defined Radio A wireless terminal (phone, PDA, etc.) that is reconfigurable via software. It enables wireless devices to be easily updated to new or later versions of the air interface and allows multiple interfaces to be supported.

--PMC modules easily integrate data processing with existing systems

--Commercial and Conduction-cooled versions available

--Interchangeable mezzanine I/O (Input/Output) The transfer of data between the CPU and a peripheral device. Every transfer is an output from one device and an input to another. See PC input/output.

--Complete development kits and application specific bundles available

Today, SBS Technologies(R) (Nasdaq:SBSE SBSE Society of Building Science Educators ), a leading provider of embedded computing technology, introduced the Tsunami PMC A30 and A40 advanced FPGA-based computing PCI Mezzanine Cards (PMC). Based on the Altera(R) high-density Stratix(R) device family, the A30 and A40 PMCs leverage FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Array) A type of gate array that is programmed in the field rather than in a semiconductor fab. Containing up to hundreds of thousands of gates, there are a variety of FPGA architectures on the market.  capabilities for high-performance commercial and military computing solutions, including software defined radio, radar, sonar, image and video processing applications. The result is a complete computing system capable of supporting algorithm-intensive, high-bandwidth applications using far less real estate, lower power, and lower cost than existing multi-CPU or DSP (1) (Digital Signal Processor) A special-purpose CPU used for digital signal processing applications (see definition #2 below). It provides ultra-fast instruction sequences, such as shift and add, and multiply and add, which are commonly used in math-intensive  systems.

Using Altera's high-performance Stratix EP1S30 or Stratix EP1S40 FPGA devices, the SBS See Small Business Server.  Tsunami PMCs feature micro-mezzanine architecture to offer a selection of off-the-shelf and custom I/O interfaces. User-defined data can be routed through the P4 connector up to 1 Gbytes/sec for high throughput.

"The Tsunami PMC is perfect for video and image processing, and good application examples are manned and unmanned vehicles for the military. The flexibility and power of the FPGA processor is ideal for the many different camera and sensor inputs that must be formatted, compressed and moved through the vehicle's network for display. FPGA-based computing power delivers ASIC-like efficiency and software re-programmability to handle intensive computing and multiple streams of data," said Ron Strauss, vice president and general manager of SBS Canada. "This product is about as flexible and modular as an embedded board can get. Between its core of reprogrammable logic and its interchangeable I/O mezzanine boards and connectors, this board can truly have multiple personalities. Our engineers are quite proud to have squeezed all of this onto a form-factor as small as a PMC."

A Tsunami PMC video bundled configuration is also being released with multiple streams of RS170 and MPEG (Moving Pictures Experts Group) An ISO/ITU standard for compressing digital video. Pronounced "em-peg," it is the universal standard for digital terrestrial, cable and satellite TV, DVDs and digital video recorders (DVRs).  or JPEG JPEG
