SBE announces software support for Hewlett Packard's Standard Instrument Control Library.

SAN RAMON, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 3, 1995--SBE Inc. (NASDAQ NASDAQ

The ability to initiate a transmission at either end.  serial hardware/software package in support of HP's Standard Instrument Control Library (SICL SICL - Standard Instrument Control Library ).

SBE's SEUS SEUS - R. Weyrauch et al. Language allowing functions to return multiple values. Implemented but never published. Mentioned in "Evolution of Lisp", G.L. Steele et al, SIGPLAN Notices 28(3):231-270 (March 1993). 4470 EISA solution provides serial I/O for up to 4 instruments or peripherals on HP 9000 series 700 workstations.

A goal of SICL (available from HP) is to make instrument programming in C more viable than it is today. The library is specifically geared toward communicating with instruments and includes routines to make this communication easy. These routines include a formatted I/O mechanism, similar to the UNIX UNIX

Operating system for digital computers, developed by Ken Thompson of Bell Laboratories in 1969. It was initially designed for a single user (the name was a pun on the earlier operating system Multics).
studio library, that provide extensive formatted I/O capabilities specifically for instrument communications. Test equipment, meters and monitors are examples of instruments that may be interfaced with the SICL package. Tasks such as status reporting, monitoring and alarm response can be automated with a SICL application on an HP workstation. SBE's TULIP driver extends the range of SICL accessible instruments through the async ports of the SEUS4470.

Although SICL instruments are supported with a variety of physical interfaces, only SBE's SEUS4470 allows multiple SICL instruments to be connected through the EIA-232 serial interface. SBE's software uses a standard tty interface, which means async ports can be used for ordinary serial devices such as printers, terminals and modems as well as SICL instruments.

"In the past, HP users had to dedicate a console port if they wanted to use EIA-232 as a SICL interface -- connecting several instruments was not an option," said Bill Allen, SBE's vice president of sales and marketing. "The new SEUS4470 gives HP users the flexibility to attach multiple SICL instruments and to mix different serial peripherals on their workstations. SBE's drivers and installation software will allow HP users to easily upgrade their systems to include this functionality."

The SEUS4470 4-port EISA controller card with SBE's TULIP driver lists for $1,090 and will be available June 1. SBE SBE - Microsoft Office Small Business Edition  also offers a Super SEU asynchronous serial product line supporting 8 to 64 ports for high performance applications.
