SBC SENIOR CLASSIC HEAVY RAIN CANCELS FIRST QUALIFYING ROUND.

Byline: Holly Edwards Staff Writer

VALENCIA - Gray skies and relentless rain greeted pro golfers Monday arriving at the Valencia Country Club for the SBC (1) (SBC Communications Inc., San Antonio, TX, www.sbc.com) A large, national telecommunications company that grew from a multitude of local and regional companies, including Southwestern Bell, Pacific Bell and Nevada Bell, into a single, unified brand by 2002.  Senior Classic.

For the first time in nearly 30 years, heavy rain cancelled the qualifying round in Ojai at the flooded Soule Park Golf Course, said Peter deYoung, director of the SBC Senior Classic tournament.

``I've been here three weeks, and I've seen the sun twice,'' said deYoung, a Chicago resident. ``I thought it was 80 degrees and sunny here all year-round.''

The qualifying round, in which 130 golfers are vying for the last four openings in the tournament, was rescheduled for today, but deYoung said with more rain coming it will probably be canceled.

In that case, the top four money-winners among the remaining candidates will be selected to compete in the tournament, he said.

That golf course, however, had limited space and parking for the tournament's 70,000 to 80,000 spectators, deYoung said. ``I don't even know where the holes are,'' he said. ``It's a new golf course and a new time of year. It's like a totally different tournament.''

As he prepares to shoot for his fourth tournament win, Inman said he is still recovering from a pulled back muscle and isn't feeling like a three-time defending champ.

He does plan to spend plenty of time icing his back, sitting in the whirlpool and stretching before the tournament begins, he said.

``The line between good and bad is about this thin,'' he said, pinching his fingers together tightly. ``I've had some of the worst games ever in the last few weeks. But everyone's dealt a hand, and some hands are better than others. I'm just going to play my hand as well as possible.''

Inman is among 78 golfers who will compete for a share of the $1.4 million winnings. The tournament's top winner will receive $210,000.

Tournament activities begin at 2 p.m. today as eight pro golfers demonstrate their shot-making skills at the 18th hole, where Tiger Woods lost the 1998 Nissan Open to Billy Mayfair, deYoung said.

On Wednesday and Thursday, 96 teams composed of one pro and four amateur golfers - who paid between $2,500 and $2,000 per day to participate - will compete in the ProAm.

The SBC Senior Classic will begin at 8 a.m. Friday and conclude late Sunday afternoon.
