In an "Industry Insiders" address today at the International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, SBC Communications Inc. Through Project Lightspeed, SBC companies plan to deliver integrated IP-based video, voice, wireless and data services, providing a communications and entertainment experience not previously realized in the mass market. Widespread availability of broadband is a key element in making convergence a reality. Whitacre said that consumer broadband adoption levels are reaching critical mass and announced that at the end of 2004, the company reached a significant milestone of surpassing 5 million DSL DSL in full Digital Subscriber Line Broadband digital communications connection that operates over standard copper telephone wires.
