However, CWA officials said Thursday that striking remains a last resort. ``We hope there's not a strike and we very much want to reach a fair agreement in bargaining,'' said spokeswoman Candice Johnson. SBC officials have said they do not expect a strike to be necessary, but they have contingency plans in case one does occur. ``We are naturally disappointed that the union has taken this step, although we are very confident that once the union reviews our proposal, they will appreciate the value and benefits it provides our employees,'' said SBC vice president Karen Jennings. ``SBC has mobilized its contingency plans for a possible work stoppage, plans designed to ensure that customers continue to receive the service they expect.'' The two sides will resume federally mediated negotiations in Washington, D.C., on Tuesday. The CWA contract expired last week.
