Wednesday morning over the trees, crews trimmed some of the eucalyptus and cut down those not in dispute.

``We don't want to take out trees that don't have to come out; the council doesn't want to do that,'' City Manager Mike Sedell said at the site. ``We're trying to figure out which can be saved.''

Ultimately, experts decided that 15 trees would be removed, 20 would stay and six would be evaluated further. A decision on those was expected today.

The eucalyptus trees made up one of several rows planted by farmers decades ago to protect their crops. Since then, some have become vulnerable to strong winds and the city has decided to take out those thought to be in danger of falling.

City officials agreed to get a second opinion, and paid nearly $1,000 to arborist Paul Rogers Paul Rogers may refer to:

The city then agreed to consult with an arborist the residents hired to see if any more could be saved. The residents said they were satisfied that they were able to help keep as many as they did.
