SAVING THE BEST FOR LAST; PLAYOFF SURPRISE BANNING MEETS PARACLETE FOR TITLE : PARACLETE VS. BANNING 7:30 P.M., NICOLET MIDDLE SCHOOL / BANNING.

Byline: Chris Cocoles Daily News Staff Writer

His team had just taken out Division XI's top seed, and Banning High School Banning High School is located in Wilmington, California, USA, and is part of the Los Angeles Unified School District. The school was named in honor of General Phineas Banning who was one of the founders of Wilmington in the late 1800s.  coach Brian Hay wondered how much was left in his Broncos.

Try two more wins and the school's first-ever appearance in a Southern Section championship game, which Banning hosts tonight at 7:30 at Nicolet Middle School.

The opponent is another major test for the bracket's at-large entry. But 12-1 Paraclete, the second seed, won't take Banning for granted.

``They look pretty good to us. They beat L.A. Baptist so we have to give them a lot of credit,'' Spirits sophomore quarterback Robbie Fockaert said.

Everyone is respecting Banning, which limped through a 6-4 regular season having lost five two-way starters from a team already lacking in numbers in numbered parts; as, a book published in numbers.

``We had only 23 players on our varsity, then we lose five more,'' Hay said. ``We have good starters, but our second-string guys probably couldn't play on most JV teams.''

In one of this year's best postseason games, Banning outlasted L.A. Baptist 51-45 in six overtimes, seemingly exhausting all of the Broncos' momentum.

``I didn't think we had another big game in us,'' Hay said. ``But our kids wanted to win.''

The second meeting wasn't close, the Broncos taking a 52-7 halftime lead and settling for a 58-19 victory.

``It's similar for us as a couple years ago. We were the wild-card team and we won two games before losing in the semifinals,'' Paraclete coach Steve Hagerty said. ``(Banning) hit on all cylinders at Notre Dame. They're predictable, and that is scary. They run a simple offense. You know what's coming, but it's still tough to stop.''

The Broncos have a pair of 1,000-yard rushers in Derrick Lee and Larry Armstrong. On defense, Ricky Lynn and Brandon Naef have recorded 43 and 33 sacks, respectively.

``They have a very good pass rush, and they are really quick so our offensive line will be put to the test,'' Hagerty said.

The Spirits have been tested throughout the playoffs, with leading rusher Dominic Washington slowed by a nagging ankle injury and the shuffling of quarterbacks Sean Fraser

``It's the makeup of these kids. Our leadership is a lot better than it has been (in previous years),'' Hagerty said. ``Our kids are confident, but they respect our opponent.''
