SANTA CLARITA Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. Situated in the Santa Clara valley and nearby canyons, Santa Clarita includes the former towns of Canyon Country,  - In an effort to preserve signs deemed historic, city staffers will request an amendment to the Santa Clarita's 11-year-old sign ordinance at Tuesday's planning commission Noun 1. planning commission - a commission delegated to propose plans for future activities and developments

 meeting.

The ordinance approved in 1990 by the Santa Clarita City Council was designed to regulate the size of local business signs and weed out violations over a 10-year period.

But a push to preserve signs having cultural or architectural significance - such as the familiar Saugus Cafe banner - has led to a compilation of historical criteria that staffers hope will be added to the ordinance.

``There are a couple of ways to determine if a sign is historic,'' said Enrique Diaz of the city planning city planning, process of planning for the improvement of urban centers in order to provide healthy and safe living conditions, efficient transport and communication, adequate public facilities, and aesthetic surroundings.  department. ``Is the business at least 50 years old? Does it represent elements of the city's history?''

Diaz said the sign most mentioned as historic is at the Saugus Cafe but that adjustment of the ordinance to recognize historical values offers support for other qualifying signs.

``We're going to bring this before the planning commission and then, hopefully, it can go to the City Council for consideration,'' Diaz said.

The commission meets at 7 p.m. in City Hall Council Chamber, 23920 Valencia Blvd.

The current ordinance restricts the number of signs a business may post, as well as the size and accessories.

For example, illegal signs include those with exposed incandescent lamps incandescent lamp
