and serves an estimated 10,000 kids daily.

The program was originally recreational, but began including academics when it added a homework hour. During this hour, ``coaches'' take kids to a quiet area and help them with their homework.

Along with their responsibilities to provide homework assistance, coaches must provide recreational activities. This can be especially challenging in triple-digit temperatures, said Ken Kitani, regional recreation director for Valley Youth Services.

Kitani said he gives his coaches a lot of credit for keeping the kids amused, even as the heat pushes them off the yards and into classrooms, auditoriums or at the very least shaded seating areas.

He started as a teacher's assistant at Toluca Lake Elementary School.

When he met the after school coaches and became acquainted with the program, he wanted in. It was another chance to work with kids, only in more of a recreational setting.

He attends Valley College and plans to transfer to California State University, Northridge CSUN offers a variety of programs leading to bachelor's degrees in 61 fields and master's degrees in 42 fields. The university has over 150,000 alumni. It's also home to a summer musical theater/theater program known as TADW (TeenAge Drama Workshop) that leads teenagers through an , where he will pursue a career in education.

Diaz said Youth Services is special because ``it is all about the children.'' He loves seeing children grow and develop through the years. Some of his former elementary kids come back as high school students.

Diaz said the program is an important factor in kids' lives because they spend more time at school than at home. He compares a coach's role to that of a big brother or sister.

``It's nice to have that feeling,'' Armas said. ``It makes me feel like I'm making changes in kids' lives.''

She once had a fifth-grade girl who belonged to a gang. Armas explained to the girl that a gang would be a negative impact on her life. The young girl took her advice and got out.

Armas believes all children are good inside, but require patience and little reminders to help them behave.

Debbie Orta has been a coach at Melvin Elementary School in Reseda for about a year. She takes her job and responsibilities as a coach seriously and knows parents sometimes don't have time to take their kids somewhere fun, so kids look forward to her program.

Orta said her job is rewarding. She respects the impact she has on children's lives. She once had two kids on her yard whose mom worked a 10-hour shift. She noticed one kid's shoes were in bad shape, so she gave him a new pair of shoes. She explained to the kid's mother that the shoes didn't fit.

Vanessa Ixta is a coach at Sutter Middle School in Winnetka. She has worked with Youth Services for about five years. She jumped on board right out of high school, volunteering as a drill team coach at Newcastle Elementary in Reseda.

She sees Youth Services as an enriching program and says it is just as beneficial to her as it is to the kids because it keeps her on her toes.

Sometimes she comes to work tired from class, but as soon as she hits the playground, the energy of the children revive her.

Ixta also appreciates the relationships she has built as a coach. She said kids know they can come to her when they need someone to talk to.
