SAVE REST FOR AFTER TEST FSH, NOTRE DAME TO BATTLE FOR MISSION LEAGUE LEAD.

Byline: Vincent Bonsignore Staff Writer

No matter what happens at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday night when Notre Dame Notre Dame IPA: [nɔtʁ dam] is French for Our Lady, referring to the Virgin Mary. Kristie has focused so much attention on the match at Notre Dame that she spent the past week or so tossing toss

 and turning in bed.

``I haven't been able to sleep much at all,'' Kristie said, laughing. ``All I think about is playing Notre Dame.''

That's understandable. Both teams enter the match with 4-0 league marks, and a victory will propel pro·pel

``It's one of those matches you circle on your calendar,'' Sacred Heart outside hitter Kelly Smiland said. ``They're playing well, we're playing well. We're both in first place, so it's an important match. These are the matches you get excited about.''

Smiland wasn't sure what to expect from Sacred Heart (8-1) coming into the season. The Tologs returned just three seniors from last year's Mission League championship club after graduating their setter setter: see sporting dog.

and some key players on offense and defense.

``We had lost so much, it made you wonder what kind of team we would have,'' said Smiland, a senior. ``Needless to say, I've been pleasantly surprised. Things came together much faster than any of us thought.''

The key has been the emergence of freshman setter Sam Orlandini, who stepped into a tough spot as a first-year player and immediately proved she belonged.

``I was a little nervous at first, because you just aren't sure what to expect being a new player at an important position,'' Orlandini said. ``Fortunately my teammates have totally gone out of their way to make me feel comfortable. That helped a lot. It's given me the chance to settle down and concentrate on playing my best.''

It also helps that she has seniors like Miland and Kristie - on and off the court.

``It was important for us to make the younger players feel welcomed, because we knew their improvements would help us be a better team,'' Kristie said. ``Also, they've done a great job.''

Sacred Heart swept its two Mission League matches last week in beating Louisville of Woodland Hills and Harvard-Westlake of Studio City. Notre Dame was just as impressive, beating Harvard-Westlake and Alemany of Mission Hills. The Knights beat Louisville two weeks ago.

``For us, this is the biggest match of the year so far,'' Orlandini said. ``We just have to come in focused and play the way we know we can.''
