Saugus, which placed third in league last season, also took the top three places in the first league meet and went 1-2-4 in the second. ``There is a lot of competition on this team to run better to push each other along,'' said Boeding, a soccer player who was recruited by Klawer to come out for track last spring. ``It's not just seven of us who deserve to run.'' It's been a team effort for the Thompsons as well. ``Our talents complement and it's a combination that has worked,'' said Pam Thompson, who also served as an assistant coach at UCLA UCLA University of California at Los Angeles UCLA University Center for Learning Assistance (Illinois State University) UCLA University of Carrollton, TX and Lower Addison, TX from 1989-92 before coming to Saugus. ``I am comfortable as the front person. So has attitude - good and bad. ``Last year a lot of people who were on the team thought we had league wrapped up and went out like it didn't matter,'' Klawer said. ``It destroyed us.'' A weeklong training camp in Catalina helped bring the team together this season. That was followed by a season-opening victory over State Division IV champion McFarland at the Seaside Invitational in September. ``We all bonded and it cemented everything,'' Getskow said. ``We've basically had the same guys as last year, but this year we've put it all together at the end. It feels like we've climbed a mountain.'' CAPTION(S): Photo Photo: Pam Thompson, a Saugus alumna, has helped coach the boys' cross country team back to prominence.
