SAUGUS HIGH WILL GET GRANT MONEY FIRST.

 students and staff learned the $642,600 in technology funding from the state would arrive sooner rather than later.

, a spokesman for the governor's education office, said Saugus High leapfrogged ahead of the pack of 200 other schools by submitting to the state Board of Education a thorough accounting of how the grant money would be spent.

``The provisions of the state law say that (schools) have to put together an implementation plan (explaining) how they are going to put this money to good use,'' Edwards said.

The 1997-98 California budget provides $100 million for first-year funding of the Digital High School program. Next year's proposed state budget sets aside an additional $136 million as the second installment of a planned $500 million in state funding over five years.

When deciding who should get the first round of funding, the state Board of Education looked at how applicant schools would incorporate computer technology into the classroom curriculum and ``not use it just to be fancy bells and whistles A slang English term for exceptional features in some product. In the computer field, it typically refers to functions in software that may be greatly appreciated by some users, even though they may not be necessary most of the time. ,'' Edwards said.

The goal of the program is that eventually ``every high school in the state will be a digital high school,'' Edwards said.
