SAUGUS HIGH'S TEAM GOT OH SO CLOSE TO GLORY.

SIMI VALLEY Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969.  - In high school sports, there's nothing worse than losing in the playoff semifinals - one last step from a chance to make history.

Tears instead of cheers.

That's a lesson Saugus High learned the hard way during a 2-1 softball softball, variant of baseball played with a larger ball on a smaller field. Invented (1888) in Chicago as an indoor game, it was at various times called indoor baseball, mush ball, playground ball, kitten ball, and, because it was also played by women, ladies'  loss to Royal of Simi Valley in a nine-inning nail-biter before an overflow crowd at Rancho Simi Rancho San José de Nuestra Senora de Altagarcia y Simi is one of the land grants in California by the Spanish government. After a series of what-ifs and coulda-woulda-should-ofs, Royal pushed across the game-winning run when Heather Erickson scored from third on a bases-loaded grounder, sliding safely just before second baseman second baseman

Kelliann McCarty's throw reached catcher Tiffany Huff's mitt.

Two pitches earlier, a Kris Lesovsky pop foul appeared catchable, but first baseman Sarah Hooper collided with a news photographer, causing her the chance to make a key out.

``Obviously, this is very hard for us,'' McCarty said.

Hooper yelled at the photographer, and he was further berated by Saugus Principal Bill Bolde immediately after the game, as a Saugus administrator ushered the photographer away from the Saugus players.

``If a photographer is on the field, he should do his job and get out of the way of a routine pop-up,'' Bolde said. ``I've been coaching for years, and of course you should realize that.''

Yet this sad ending did not come down to one play. There was the misjudged fly ball by Saugus on the first play of the game. The silly base-running mistake that cost Saugus what would have been the winning run in the top the seventh. Et cetera ET CETERA. A Latin phrase, which has been adopted into English; it signifies. It's always a team effort when you win, and it's so easy to finger-point when you lose.

One thing is for sure: Losing is a lot more difficult, especially at this crucial point because semifinalists always can smell the title. And the thinking is, it's still wonderful just to get to the final game.

But those are issues Saugus can ponder today, for the rest of the week, until the beginning of next season, or just maybe for the rest of their lives.

The girls came close, very close. But not close enough. Not close enough to be truly satisfied.

What made this particular loss even more depressing was false hope. But alas, another dramatic happy ending was not to be. There was no joy in Mudville, just shattered dreams "Shattered Dreams" is a single by Russian pop star Sergey Lazarev.
