SAUGUS HAS A CHANCE FOR GLORY.Byline: GERRY GITTELSON Staff Writer SAUGUS -- It's finally the Saugus High football team's chance to share some of the spotlight. The Centurions haven't won a playoff game Noun 1. playoff game - one game in the series of games constituting a playoff game - a single play of a sport or other contest; "the game lasted two hours" playoff - any final competition to determine a championship this century and have rarely been mentioned in the same breath as neighborhood rivals Canyon, Hart and Valencia over the past few years or so. But this year is different. Saugus (5-3, 2-0) can all but wrap up its first league title since 1981 with a victory over Foothill League rival Canyon (5-2, 2-0) at 7:30 tonight at College of the Canyons College of the Canyons is one of the fastest-growing community colleges in the state. According to the National Junior College Research Association, College of the Canyons consistently ranks in the top 50 community colleges in the nation. . Of course, it won't be easy. Defending Div. II champion Canyon is a heavy favorite because the Cowboys cowboys, in American history. 1 Tory marauders, adherents to the British cause in the American Revolution, who fought in the contested area of Westchester co., N.Y. have defeated much stronger opponents this year, and you'll remember the Cowboys beat Saugus 55-7 last season. ``Canyon is obviously a very formidable opponent,'' Saugus coach Jason Bornn said. ``They're the best team we've played yet. They're phenomenal, and I have the utmost respect and reverence for them because they're the reigning league and Div. II champion.'' J.J. DiLuigi, Canyon's star running back, has vowed not to take Saugus lightly. ``This is a very important game because it's for the league title, and Saugus is very good -- the best Saugus team I've ever seen,'' DiLuigi said. ``The key for us is to just play Cowboy cowboy Horseman skilled at handling cattle in the U.S. West. From c. 1820, cowboys were employed in small numbers on Texas ranches, where they had learned the skills of the vaquero (Spanish: “cowboy”). football. We're exactly where we want to be for this point in the season, and this is probably our most physical team ever. We're out to put the hurt on people.'' Saugus knows it's an underdog, but that's OK because the Centurions feel like they've got more to play for. ``We're just going to come out fighting like it's our game to win, and we'll let the chips fall where they may,'' Saugus receiver/defensive back Kyle Monson said. ``There's a lot of hype, and it's going to be a packed house. We can't think too much about that, we just need to play football. We know we can beat this team, that we have it within ourselves. We just need to come and take care of business.'' If anyone knows Canyon from the inside, it's Bornn, who was a Canyon assistant under Welch Welch , William Henry 1850-1934. American pathologist and bacteriologist who discovered the bacteria that causes gas gangrene. in 2001. ``What I've done at Saugus is take what I've learned from Harry Welch and tried to put it into our own program,'' Bornn said. ``I've tried to emulate a lot of things about Canyon's football team. I know Harry has caught some flak through the years, but one thing I can say about him is he's always been kind to me and has been a mentor in a lot of different ways. I have the utmost respect for him.'' Obviously, Saugus must first try to contain DiLuigi, who scored six touchdowns against the Centurions last season.
