SAUGUS FLUSTERS CANYON.

as the Cowboys stood at the net and glared at them.

It's one reason Saugus had beaten Canyon just once before this week. Tuesday's 10-15, 15-9, 15-11, 15-6 victory not only improved the Centurions' record to 7-1, it moved them closer to their first Foothill League title. Canyon long has been considered the top challenger.

Gone also was some of that intimidation.

``They played classy class·y

,'' Saugus coach Bobbie Estes said.

It wasn't evident at first, as Canyon jumped out to a 9-1 lead in the first game. But the team fought back and, although it lost the first game, made it clear the Cowboys weren't going to bully them this time.

Eight players had at least eight kills, and the team totaled 50 kills in the match.  Dave Van Duzee dove to make a set, resulting in a perfect set to Tom Hilton.

``He didn't know where the set went. It was perfect to Tom Hilton,'' Estes said.

And it was Canyon that became flustered flus·ter

. At one point, middle blocker Jimmy Giordano screamed at his teammates about their play, prompting Cowboys coach Spencer MacCuish to remove Giordano from the game.

Up-and-comer: A swimmer's name to remember would be Hart sophomore Eric Pritchett. By swimming the 50-yard freestyle in 22.2 seconds, he qualified for the Southern Section meet and earned the fourth spot on the team's sprint relay, along with Jackie Ervin, Ryan Parmenter and Christian Kneppeck.

``This guy is coming on,'' Hart coach Steve Neale said. ``He's hard-working, quiet, modest and built like a brick house.''

The 6-1, 160-pound Pritchett began swimming last year and liked it so much, he joined Canyons Aquatics Club and began swimming full time. On more than one occasion, he swims morning workouts, joins Hart in the afternoon and works out with his club in the evening.

.

``I told him, `Eric, I don't want you to burn out. I want you to swim in college,' '' Neale said. ``He says, `Don't worry coach, I won't.' ''

Undefeated: Canyon's boys' tennis team hasn't won a league title since taking the Golden League in 1986. Coach Bob Gravett doesn't expect this year to be any different, but he thinks this might be the season a doubles team wins the league.

Seniors Brian White Brian White may refer to:

  • Brian White (Chairman of the Buddhist Council of New South Wales) (born 1959),
and Ryan Tohill are trying to become the first to do so. They are 7-0 in Foothill League sets, having swept Saugus and Burroughs and defeated Hart's top duo before rain halted that match.

The real test comes Tuesday at Burbank, which has won 10 straight league titles. Gravett, while picking the Bulldogs to win the league again, says the doubles teams are weaker than in past years, giving White and Tohill and chance.

``It will be a good test,'' Gravett said.
