SAUGUS BOYS SEEK GLIMPSE OF PLAYOFF PARADISE; TEAM TO FACE S.V. IN FIRST ROUND.

That Saugus (13-12, 5-5) made the playoffs at all is reason enough to rejoice, as an 0-3 start to its Foothill League season left it questioning whether it had what it takes to reach the postseason.

A win over league co-champion Valencia gave Saugus its first Foothill victory. It went 4-2 the rest of the year. Then three straight losses by Canyon (5-5) to end the season (the first against Saugus) helped the Centurions make the playoffs.

The two teams finished tied for third, but Saugus won the second tiebreaker tie·break·er

, which compared records against the league co-champions. The Centurions and Cowboys split their head-to-head meetings, which stands as the first tiebreaker.

``I'm pretty happy,'' Saugus coach Jeff Hallman said. ``It's easy to look back and be critical of things, but going into the year, I didn't think we'd go into the playoffs. But we're not done yet. We want to come out and play well on Friday.''

Hallman stressed that he wanted his players focused on playing their game well despite Simi Valley's record. But he also recognized that finishing third in the Foothill League was an accomplishment, considering his team only won three of 15 summer-league games.

For Hallman, in his fifth year as head coach, Friday will mark a return to the postseason. He took his first two Saugus teams into the playoffs, being eliminated in the first round each time.

Hallman has been there before, but the seniors were freshman when the last Centurions team made the playoffs.

``I'm excited - big-time,'' senior point guard Doug Summerhays said. ``I've played in a volleyball playoff game Noun 1. playoff game - one game in the series of games constituting a playoff

Inspired play from Summerhays, forwards Jerome Edwards, Nic Echevestre, Kurt DeMaio, along with freshman Marc Holmquist, have fueled the Centurions' run to the playoffs.

``I just want to show people that we can play, that Saugus hasn't been a fluke fluke, parasitic flatworm of the trematoda class, related to the tapeworm. Instead of the cilia, external sense organs, and epidermis of the free-living flatworms, adult flukes have sucking disks with which they cling to their hosts and an external cuticle that  all year,'' Summerhays said. ``We have to play each minute like it's our last. We have nothing to lose; nobody thought much of us to begin with.''

While Hallman has not seen Simi Valley play this year, he has some idea what he is up against.

``I know they're talented, deep and big,'' he said. ``I don't know Don't know (DK, DKed)
