SAUGUS' MOSER RETURNS WITH GUSTO.

Byline: Nevin Barich Nevin Barich (born August 6, 1979) is a former American sports journalist now working as the Senior Editor of The National Notary, a trade magazine based in Los Angeles with a circulation of more than 300,000 nationwide.  Daily News Staff Writer

Lindsay Moser needed a break.

``Mainly, after last season, I was kind of getting burnt out,'' she said. ``As a whole, I was just like, ``Ugh, I am so sick of it.' ''

The standout left-forward for Saugus High's girls' soccer team had been playing the sport since she was seven years old and had been playing year-round for the past five years.

back-to-back seasons that saw Saugus struggle to consecutive fourth-place finishes in the Foothill League and had not seen the postseason since her freshman year.

Suddenly, Moser's heart just wasn't in it anymore.

So Moser, after going through the motions at a couple of summer club practices, took a break from the game she had played nonstop HP's brand name for its fault-tolerant servers, which range in size from four CPUs to 4,000 CPUs. The NonStop line was created by Tandem Computers, which was acquired by Compaq, which later became part of HP.  since 1988.

``I took a break just this summer,'' Moser said. ``Mainly, I just got out of shape.''

But after the summer, Moser, a 17-year-old senior who has been a starter throughout her high school career, found out that she was rejuvenated re·ju·ve·nate

and her play has improved as a result. She has seven goals and four assists this season to help the Centurions rise from the cellar cellar

Finally, she decided to return but when she came for tryouts, she was in for a rude awakening.

``At tryouts, I felt really incompetent incompetent adj. 1) referring to a person who is not able to manage his/her affairs due to mental deficiency (lack of I.Q., deterioration, illness or psychosis) or sometimes physical disability. ,'' Moser said. ``Everyone else was in shape and had been playing all summer on club teams.''

Yet despite falling behind the rest of her teammates, Moser didn't quit.

``Honestly, people always told me that I'd been good,'' Moser said. ``But I wasn't good so I wanted to do better. I wanted to play.''

Suddenly, her love for the game was back. The more she played, the more she remembered why she had stuck with the sport all those years. Though she ``didn't even realize it'', she missed the game of soccer.

It wasn't hard for Moser to get back in shape. Under new coach Ellen Dinsenbacher, Moser and Saugus (6-2-3 overall) have focused on conditioning this season, practicing six days a week and running four to five miles every time.

``It's good for us,'' Moser said about the conditioning. ``It's made a real big difference. We've become a second-half team. We score a lot of goals in the second half. When the other teams get tired, we keep going because of the conditioning. It gives us an advantage.''

Moser hopes to win the league title this year, which has been won by Hart the past five seasons. She also hopes to return to the playoffs for the first time since 1996. Teammate Jeannette Del Bagno feels that Moser might prove to be the key Saugus needs to achieve these goals.

``I think she's just an awesome player,'' Del Bagno said. ``She's got great drive and she cares about the team and about winning.''

Moser, who because of her sudden great conditioning plans to run track in the spring, plans to attend College of the Canyons College of the Canyons is one of the fastest-growing community colleges in the state. ``Yeah, hopefully, God-willing,'' Moser said.

No doubt she'll be loving it every step of the way.
