SAUGUS' HILTON ABLE TO HIT A TON; SENIOR LEADS CENTURIONS INTO PLAYOFFS.

Byline: Patrick Hipes Daily News Staff Writer

It's been a very good year for Saugus High volleyball volleyball, outdoor or indoor ball and net game played on a level court. An upright net, 3 ft (or 1 m) high, the top of which stands 8 ft (2.43 m) from the ground for men, 7 ft 4 1/8 in (2.  player Tom Hilton.

He is a main reason why Saugus made the Southern Section Division I volleyball playoffs. Except for changes in the hereditary material that come about by mutation, all members of a clone are genetically  him,'' volleyball coach Bobbie Estes said.

Hilton has a concern, however. Why did the Southern Section committee make a league champ play a wild-card game?

``We had a pretty good record,'' Hilton said. ``I kind of feel we got a bad deal.''

The team had done everything it had to do. It beat Quartz Hill, at the time ranked in the Southern Section polls. It beat Canyon not once, not twice, but three times - a team that until this season had been Saugus' largest obstacle to the elusive Foothill crown.

Situated in the Santa Clara valley and nearby canyons, Santa Clarita includes the former towns of Canyon Country,  area have given others the perception teams like Saugus and Canyon cannot play with the big boys. But players like Hilton are helping to change the image.

``It's tough in our league to come to a high point,'' he said. ``But we really get at each other at practice. We are all working hard to get to the next level.''

Hilton, who's father is a minister and mom is a travel agent, didn't start playing theo sport until he was a sophomore, when Estes corralled him into the program because he was tall and could jump.

He developed quickly as an outside hitter and by the start of the season he was not only elected one of three team captains but filled in occasionally at setter setter: see sporting dog.

``He's become an amazingly better setter,'' Estes said. ``He's always had nice hands and he said the other day that he'd wished he'd been setting for three years rather than three months.''

, has accepted him and he's awaiting the paperwork on the financial package. Flora wants Hilton as the Leopards' setter.

It's a task Hilton's ready to take on.

``(Coach Estes) says I'm kind of like a diamond in the rough,'' said Hilton. ``She said with the right college coach and if I'm not afraid to work . . . I'm not afraid to work hard.''

It's that kind of attitude that has helped Hilton shine on and off the court. He is the person Estes goes to for answers about the team and the team goes to him for answers about her.

``Tom is our mediator mediator n. a person who conducts mediation. He's come from a long line of communicators and that's the gift he gets from his dad. He's a terrific kid.''

Said Hilton: ``I picked up a lot of what I do from my family. It is a great balance and they're always on me to do my best.''

It's worked. And now he's ready to try something new.

``I think I'm ready I'm Ready is the double platinum second release from R&B singer Tevin Campbell. I think I'm ready to test myself at the next level.''
